Fun, Cardiology, and the dreaded Fontan

    First… the FUN!

If you’re reading this and you live in the northern United States then you know what a dreadfully long, cold, and snowy winter it has been. In Michigan, we have had more snow and consecutive days below freezing this year than we have had in over 2 decades. When you can’t get out of the state for a nice warm vacation what can you do? How about a water park? Indoor of course. We got a group of friends together (12 adults and 8 kids ages ~2-4) and spent a weekend at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City. We all had a really great time, especially Evan.

    And the not so fun…

Today Evan had a cardiology appointment here in Kalamazoo. The appointment went well despite how it made Sarah and I feel. It’s time to schedule his next surgery, the Fontan operation. We’ve known for over a year that this would be the spring/summer that it would happen but that didn’t change how it felt to hear the words from the cardiologist. She will be calling U of M and letting them know that he is ready and they will contact us to setup a heart catheterization and the operation. They say to plan for a 6 week hospital stay but it could be as little as a couple weeks depending on how quickly he recovers. I don’t know what the average stay is, I also know that this kid isn’t average. The operation is not urgent but we would like to get it over with and out of the way so that he can heal and enjoy the summer weather. We will let you know once we hear the final date. The rest of the appointment went well. His oxygen saturation was at about 80%, EKG looked normal, he’s 32 pounds (69th percentile for his age). They chose not to do an echo this time for a couple reasons, 1) they did an echo in December and don’t feel like it would have changed much and 2) U of M will be doing one soon anyway.

fontan_proceedureThis is a depiction of what they will be doing. The picture isn’t a perfect representation because Evan’s anatomy is  a little different but it’s close enough. The heart on the left is about where he is now, the one on the right is what it will be after the operation. In very basic terms, his current blood flow (after 2 operations), is that deoxygenated blood returning to the heart from the top half of his body has been redirected to his lungs while the bottom half of his body still drains into his heart and mixes with the oxygenated blood (hence the 80% oxygen saturation). The Fontan will complete his new plumbing by directing the bottom half of returning blood directly to the lungs.

  • Lots of Pictures Part 5 of 5

Ok so we are rounding the bend on this massive photo update…

These pictures are all kinda random and are from June-ish to now.

Eating & Therapy – Evan is still making progress.  He is really not offended by any tastes, just textures.  But he is improving and we are working on teaching him how to chew and swallow.  Pretty hard when you’ve never done it before in your life.

Outside – We played outside and soaked in the sun as much as possible.

Selfie – Whenever you are bored, what is there to do?  Let your little guy take photos of himself (what kiddo doesn’t love looking at themself?) and take lots and lots of photos.  When I have a bored Evan on my lab, that’s what I do.

Silly boy – Here’s our goofy guy.

Sleeping – No matter how old he is, I’ll never get tired of watching him sleep.

  • Lots of Pictures Part 4

    October and November 2013

Oct 9 – Papa decided to sell his truck in favor for a more economical car.  Evan loves Papa’s truck and will miss it.  So he can remember, we made sure we took some pics with Evan in the truck before it was gone.  Somehow I think this boy will grow up and want a pick-up truck.

Oct 12 – The place we go to for therapy had a fun day with a big bounce house, a fire truck, lots of crafts and games.  They even had a silent raffle.  We won 3 private swim lessons for Evan.  Our little Evy-fish can finally go bananas in a pool!

Oct 19 – Cousin Jacob turned 9 so we went to his b-day party – enjoyed some hot dogs and then saw Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 – Evan’s first movie.

Oct 20 – Evan was helping me in the kitchen and being all-around cute

Oct 26 – The Scherrers had a Halloween party at their house.  The theme was superheros.  Dada went as Hulk, Evan was Superman, and I went as Superman’s mom.  It was a really great time and I love our big get-togethers that happen too rarely now that we all have children.

Oct 27 – Evan and I made Halloween cookies, a first for the little man.  He had a great time with the sprinkles.

Oct 31 – Halloween!  We did a little trick-or-treating around the neighborhood because the weather was a bit crummy and Evan is still a little young.  Because he doesn’t eat, I bought a few little toys and dada went around to various neighbors and planted the toys with them.  So when Evan came around to trick or treat, they handed him a little toy instead of candy.  We don’t have many photos because I think I have more on video.  And yes, I cried… thankful that Ev is around for this experience and soaking it all in.

Nov 3 – I wanted to take a more formal photoshoot of my little Superman…

Nov 12 – Evan had a check-up at UofM regarding his pacemaker since his re-implantation surgery was over a year ago.  They were very happy with everything but had to change his pacemaker setting.  He was originally set to 80-150 bpm but they realized he goes above 150 and at that point his contractions are out of sync.  So they changed his upper limit to 230 bpm and essentially gave him more energy.  Although you can’t tell too much.  Even when he wasn’t paced and was at 55 bpm he still had loads of energy!

    September 2013

Sept 2 – Evan and I did an art  project in the driveway that doubled as therapy time 😉

Sept 6 – We met up with The Hargers and Jacksons for Evan’s first football game.  He behaved great and the weather was so beautiful!

Sept 8 – We live right by Gull Meadow Farms so dada took Ev and X over there to play around and burn off some energy.

Sept 12 – Dada took Ev back to the park and we can officially say this summer he has mastered slides!

Sept 14 – We went back to Gull Meadow Farms and met up with the McDonalds, Scherrers, and Jacksons.  The weather was great but on a nice September afternoon the place was packed!  Then we went to the Scherrer’s house and ordered some pizza.

Sept 28 – Another beautiful Saturday so we took X to ArtPrize in Grand Rapids.  It was so crazy busy that I’m not sure I’d want to go back and experience that insanity again…

  • Lots of Pictures Part 2

Here are a bunch of photos from August 2013

August 8 – Evan had a neurology check up at UofM with Dr. Leiber.  Evan has no issues and “graduated” from following up with the doctor unless we feel it is necessary. So proud of my buddy and grateful he as been able to recover thus far.

August 9 – Papa and Xander came over and I took some pictures of them being goofy.

August 10 – Evan wanted to play outside with his water table and roller coaster

August 11 – I wanted to do a photoshoot with Evan at the park.  We went to the baseball fields.  My little guy was pretty serious but I got some of my favorite pictures of him.

August 15 – We went back to Cincinnati to get the g-tube switched out.  Finally got a mini button and get rid of having an extension constantly.  At first we were nervous that something was wrong with the site but it has healed nicely and works awesome.  Completely different experience than his first g-tube that was midline.

August 16 – We went to Grand Haven with Papa and Xander.  First we stopped by the Imagination Station and then we went to the beach.  It was such a great day but the water was really, really cold.

August 17 – We took the dogs to the park and ran around the baseball field again.

August 24 – We went with the Scherrers and the Jacksons to John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids.  I think that zoo is great and would recommend going to anyone.  I didn’t realize it was so hilly tho!  The next day we all met up for breakfast.

August 31 – Evan’s first trip to the cottage!  I had very mixed emotions… I was so happy that Evan was able to go because I have such fond memories of going up north and I wanted Evan to experience that in his life and I was so grateful he was alive to feel the sand between his toes and go on his first boat ride.  Plus Great Grandma Jo was there and I’m not sure how many times we will be able to all go up there together.  I hope more, but I soaked it in like it was the only time.  Bliss!

  • Lots of Pictures Part 1

So here comes a series of monster posts.  Hope you like lots of pics with little content because there’s about 5 months worth of updating to do… yikes

June 29 – A get together with some colleagues from work from my old unit.  We all had babies close to each other too so there were 5 little ones there too.  We brought the bounce house to see if kids would like it and it was a hit!

July 4 – Watching the parade in downtown Richland and then going to Nana and Papa’s to watch fireworks in Portage

July 13 – Evan had lots of fun in his swimming pool.  Then Evan and dada went to the 1st birthday party of Evan’s girlfriends – twins Emma and Megan

July 16 – This was the day Papa took Nana to the hospital.  We don’t live very far away so we had Xander stay with us so Papa could be with Nana by himself.

July 22 – Our friends and neighbors the McDonalds came over and hung outside with us

July 23 – I took the boys to the park so Papa and dada could talk to Nana’s doctors.  I know Nana would have loved these photos of her boys.

July 26 – We all went to the park this time to get away from everything for just a moment.

July 27 – Xander came over and the boys were jumping on the futon.  Monkey see, monkey do.  It was a good break of levity as Nana was very sick at this point.

July 31 – I took the boys to Jungle Joe’s so Papa and dada could be with Nana at the hospital.  I was hoping the boys would have fun and be oblivious to the serious situation we were all facing with our broken hearts.

August 6 – There are only a couple pictures from Nana’s service.  Trying to find moments of happiness with all of the love and support family and friends have provided.  If anyone else has pictures, please share them with us.

  • Happy 2 Day

I’m working on compiling everything from the past couple months into some monster posts.  Evan and I share the same sentiment about it all…

    1-DSCN8870_2

Some days are a little rougher than others.  Some days little boys like to wake up at 6:15 am and only take a 1 hour nap.  Some days will be pretty rough when little boys are too busy go-go-going instead of resting.  It’s probably part being a 2-year old, part growing pains, part not feeling great, and part not sleeping much that gave us a little cranky boy today.  He’s been a little more on the cranky side ever since he turned 2.  But I think that just comes with the age.

Speaking of 2, today Evan is 2 years + 2 months + 2 days old!

Sorry for being so far behind.  We are working on it.  Oftentimes it is difficult to stomach sitting in front of a computer after sitting at one all day at work.  Slowly we’ll get there.  Thanks for your patience.

Here is Evan acting like he is 2 2 2!

  • A very sad couple of weeks – Goodbye Nana

A very sad couple of weeks – Goodbye Nana

This is a difficult post to write and I’m not exactly sure where to start.

We had a lot of joy and celebration on Evans birthday a few weeks ago but there was 1 very important person who was unable to be there – Nana.  The Tuesday before Evan’s party, Nana went into the hospital.  She was feeling pretty crummy and by the time the party came around she was still hospitalized with no real good grasp on what was going on. On Sunday, Evan’s actual birthday, we visited Nana in the hospital. She felt and looked a bit worse but was otherwise the same.  That would be the last time we would have a conversation with her. The next day, she was rushed to the operating room for surgery on her leg.

Over the next few days things quickly spiraled out of control. Nana was diagnosed with a septic Staphylococcus infection as well as necrotizing fasciitis (WARNING: Graphic pictures) on her lower right leg. Her liver and kidneys began to fail and she later developed pneumonia from a Psuedomonas infection in her lungs.  Nana never slipped into a coma but was heavily sedated as she was dependent on a ventilator.  We had small glimmers of hope for recovery but several of her organs were too damaged. We learned Nana would never recover and she was released from her physical body Saturday August 3 at 3:20 pm without any pain or suffering and surrounded by loved ones. Nana was only 57.

We were completely unprepared for her passing and her sudden illness was always seen as a temporary inconvenience until things got very serious very quickly. But she should not be remembered for her passing but rather how she lived.  Nana, Papa, and Xander all moved to Michigan from Florida to help take care of Evan so we could both work. It was that selfless attitude that was quintessential Nana. She loved her grandsons dearly and doted on our little boy so much. Xander will remember her more because he is six but it will be up to us to make sure Evan remembers. I am so happy she got to be with him so much and he will always know how much she was there for him.  It’s impossible to hold back the tears when Evan calls out for Nana or goes looking for her in their house. I know that time will heal and we find comfort in the fact that Nana is no longer in any pain as she had been dealing with it for years but we are still frustrated that she wasn’t able to live to a ripe old age, help us get through Evans next surgery, or watch both boys grow up to be the amazing men that we know they will be.

  • Norwood 2 year anniversary

The Norwood.  The first in a series of 3 surgeries for single ventricle kids, it is the most dangerous and complicated.  Often it occurs within days of new life and it catapults you firmly into the world of complex cardiac heart defects.  Never before will a body be so pure or untouched pre-Norwood.  After, it is like driving up a mountain wearing a blindfold – never knowing what is ahead or where exactly to turn but always very much aware of being constantly surrounded by the fear of death.  I would never wish this moment of time on anyone.

Evan’s Norwood hospital stay lasted 6 weeks (technically I suppose it was 5 weeks considering they waited until he was 1 week old to operate).  I make a concerted  effort to kiss his scars and rub his chest in the hopes that he will grow up not ashamed or uncomfortable with his appearance.  But in that week I did soak up that time that I knew would be precious with my unadulterated baby before his body would become a collector of scars.  Evan came through the Norwood in complete heart block necessitating a pacemaker, survived with no ill lasting effects from his stroke, and it  was over a year before we realized he lost his thymus in the process.  I am so, so proud of him and all of the other little babies that fight for their lives.

    We’ve come so far!

Here are some other pictures of the day.  Hope others lost in the Norwood fog can see that it can, truly, get better.

  • Happy 2nd Birthday Evan!

IMG_9909I can’t believe it’s been 2 years.  I think every parent thinks that.  It is crazy how something seems simultaneously soooo long and eye-blinking fast.  We had a birthday party for Evan on Saturday.  It was great weather, great friends, great food… you couldn’t have asked for anything better.  We didn’t get too many photos taken because we were just more focused on enjoying the time and not being stuck behind a camera.

There’s nothing more that we can say that hasn’t already been said about you, Evy.  You’re an amazing little boy, a joy to be around, and I don’t know how we lucked out so much.  Thank you so much for the abundance of hugs and kisses that have come our way lately.  I know you won’t be so kissy to your parents in the future so we are soaking it up like crazy.  And thank you for taking almost 2 years until you learned the word “no.”  Seriously, he only started telling us “no” like a week ago.  Like I said, we’re lucky. <3

We got a bunch of balloons for his party and the next day they were all over the ground.  He loved running through them and throwing them.  At the end of the day though, that got pretty boring.  So he decided to spice things up a bit the only way he knows how…

And this video is about a month old but we neglected to post it on the website, so here you go…
